Ally Waltemyer, Commentary Editor

Senior Ally Waltemyer is the commentary editor for the Courier this year. This is her second year on the staff and she is excited to write, help with the daily newscast, and edit other people’s opinions. She is the president of Alliance and the secretary of Creative Writing Club. Outside of school, she enjoys listening to music, reading, and volunteering in her community.

Music Department Spreads Holiday Cheer with Winter Concert

The orchestra, jazz band and choir started preparing for the concert in October.

The choir finished off the concert with "Hallelujah," inviting the audience to stand with them in the annual ending to the performance.

“Our holiday concert is one of the biggest ones and everyone really enjoys that one...it’s the most popular," said senior Alex Fabie. "It’s actually the most crowded because we have three ensembles performings at once.”

Senior Matt Sharkey reads the introduction to the next piece of music for the orchestra.These transitional readings inform the audience of background information of the music and allow for the performing students to prepare for the next song.

“I really like getting in the Christmas spirit with all the festive songs," said Fabie. "It’s not always the standard Christmas songs, there’s always a variation, there are different melodies that go with it.”

The jazz band added their own spin on the classic "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

“Anytime we can engage a large audience in a live performance, we are spreading a good feeling for music," said Poole. "In this instance, we are performing music which is well known making for an even better time.”

“The Winter Concert is actually a ‘collage’ performance," said Band Director Christian Poole. "Each of the five groups plays one selection, then hands off the next piece to a different group. It’s allows for a blending of music styles and keeps things really moving.”

The Select Strings group of the orchestra stood to perform about ice hotels and the cold.

The orchestra played one of the more famous holiday songs from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

"We all put a lot of work into it, so our passion for music and everyone else’s passion for music spreads around," said senior Jazz Band Vocalist Ella Wetzel. "Also with a lot of old friends and family being around, it all just makes everything happy.”

“I just really love hearing all the different ensembles together," said Wetzel. "I really love the orchestra and the jazz band, they do a really fantastic job.”

For the first time in Winter Concert history, junior Annie Hebel performed a solo on the electric violin.

Students wore pajamas on Monday for Mini-THON Spirit Week.

On Tuesday, students wore gray to raise awareness for brain cancer.

"I think it's important to increase cancer awareness," said English teacher Heath Hallman, "I personally have been touched by cancer. I think most people know somebody who has been affected by cancer in a negative way so it’s really important that we try to support efforts to stop it.”

“I think this Spirit Week supports a very good cause," said English teacher Erica Littleton, "and I think anything that helps to raise funds or bring money or bring our attention to very good causes is certainly worth everyone participating.”
