Six teams will compete in six competitions, all going for the trophy.
Staff teams from all the SYC school buildings, and a team of SHS seniors, are ready to compete at the 15th annual Battle of the Buildings tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 18.
With the high school doors opening at 5:30 p.m., the SYCSD Battle of the Buildings is an opportunity for everyone to watch teachers and students engage in friendly competition. Close to a thousand spectators show up every year. Those that come to cheer for their favorite team are also helping to pay for scholarships for current seniors and alumni.
The Battle of the Buildings isn’t just for fun; it’s a fundraiser to help raise money for school events and the Alumni Association. The Alumni Association contributes to scholarships for graduating students.

Chief financial and operations officer and school board secretary Susan Green is one of the major organizer of the Battle of the Buildings. Green helps to come up with ideas to improve the games. She also works to keep ticketing prices low.
The lower ticket prices there are, the more people that are willing and able to come and support the cause. If the ticket prices are too high, people won’t want to go as much compared to the lower prices.
“We try to keep the prices low, so that as many people can come as possible,” Green said.
Tickets will cost $5 each. Processing fees will apply to purchases made by credit card online and at the door. Tickets may also be purchased with cash at the door.
Most of the events that the teams compete in are races from one end of the gym to the other. In the past, races have included relays like holding an egg on a spoon or a sack race; however, races are not the only competition style. Team members also do games involving throwing a football in a relay format or a basketball dunking contest.
There are some limits that have been set to prevent possible injuries. They used to do an activity where you push an office chair with someone on it across the gym, but had to stop because people could have gotten hurt if something went wrong.
In order to prevent any injuries Battle of the Buildings has resorted to more games like throwing a ball or events that require a quick wit and coordination.
“It’s minute-to-minute kind of game,” Green said. You may have to stack stuff and have to run out and stack stuff and then come back.”
