The Library: More Than Just Books

Colorful puzzle pieces and Lego flowers grace small tables as a skeleton reads a book at the circulation desk in the library.

The library’s warm, autumnal vibes invite all students and staff to partake in reader challenges and future occasions, like a librarian favorite, “blind date with a book” program.

Head librarian Kate Daniels is dedicated to making the library inviting and engaging with comfy seating and appealing programs.

“I planned on advertising [blind date with a book] more last year, but I literally could not keep [books] on the shelf, like as soon as I put a few out, they were checked out and gone,” Daniels said.

Daniels is currently planning for November’s “Thank a Teacher, Get a Pie” program and a reader’s challenge in January, with other fun challenges interspersed in between.

As the library continues to offer these programs, its vibe also stays updated with the seasons.

“I want students to feel very comfortable when they come into the library, so I try to keep the lighting very comfortable where it’s…not all the way on, having a lot of seating options, interacting with students,” Daniels said.

The library is full of activity because of Daniels’s hard work to keep everything calm, festive and a great place to be productive.

“It’s used all the time by different classes that come in,” Daniels said. ¨It’s used for a lot of different clubs, and people really enjoy coming in for lunch.”

Students also appreciate the effort that is put into it as well.

Senior Jackson Adams uses the library frequently and appreciates the serene atmosphere.

“At the library, I’m able to [work] more efficiently than if I were in a class, where I can’t eliminate all the distractions because maybe friends come up to me and try to talk to me and all those other distractions,” Adams said. “It’s a little easier to work in there because it’s quieter, and me and my friends can go there and work and do whatever we need to get done. Be in and out quick.”

Junior Faith Broadwater also enjoys the peaceful surroundings and pleasing decorations that make the calming atmosphere a great place to unwind or work.

Broadwater likes “how quiet [the library] is” and “…[likes] the decorations.”

In the fast paced environment at school, the library remains one of the most unique rooms with its soothing setting and engaging programs that the librarian works  to provide for students.
