Girls tennis is staying positive despite injuries and a 4-6 record overall, 3-4 in Division play.
The team’s number one singles player, freshman team captain Summer Antkowiak, received an ankle injury that prevented her from playing four games, in which they lost three of the last four of their played matches.
Junior Vicky Chen, a second year player, showcases the team’s determination amongst setbacks.
“We lost against Red Lion, New Oxford, and Kennard-Dale,” Chen said.” During the Kennard-Dale match, the number one singles and number 3 singles players were out, so that definitely affected the team’s performance overall. Despite everything, we won our most recent game against Biglerville, 4-1, and we are looking forward to [getting] back on track after Summer returns.”
Since most of the 2022-2023 varsity team has since graduated or is competing in another sport, the team is also relatively young.
Coach Marianne Michels, who has been coaching the girls team for 16 seasons, is excited to see the hard work of her players pay off.
“The season has been going well, but this is a growing season, as we lost all of our varsity players from last season and are starting mostly fresh,” Michels said. “We gained a very talented freshman, Summer Antkowiak, who has been training for a few years, and I am really looking forward to seeing her impact on the team.”
Chen is happy with the team’s level of play despite their lack of experience.
“Everyone playing on varsity this year has never played for points before,” Chen said. “So, considering that we are all new to this, we are doing great!”
According to Antkowiak, she is excited to “[be] a part of the team and [to make] a far run in counties this year.”
