The local Pier 1 Imports store in Shrewsbury,  and another local in Carlisle, PA, will be closing down sometime in February.

Back in April 2015, CEO Alex Smith announced that Pier 1 Imports will be closing down over 100 stores across the nation.

Librarian Sandy May feels sorry for the people losing their jobs and is upset the stores are closing down.

“It’s a shame to lose a business.  I feel sorry for the people losing their jobs there,” said May.  “I understand why they did close.  Other stores like HomeGoods sell decorations for less.”

Due to a lack of income that the company strived to obtain, the stores will be closing down and leaving the company with around 1,000 stores left in the country.  This will be going on for the next three years.

Students in Susquehannock have been quite saddened by  othe local Pier 1 closing down.

Senior Kane Thomas enjoys shopping at Pier 1 Imports.

“I think it’s really sad because there’s a Pier 1 Imports in York and Hunt Valley, but having one in Shrewsbury is easy to go to because it’s so close by,” said Thomas.  “It was nice looking at all the cool things they had in there.”

Junior Rachel Sergent is also saddened by the news of Pier 1 Imports closing but understands why the local store is closing down.

“I don’t like how it’s closing down because I like to go in there to look at decorations,” said Sergent.  “I understand why it’s closing down, since it’s so expensive in there and most of the people in our area don’t want to buy a lot of those expensive things.”

Residents in Shrewsbury, Glen Rock, and New Freedom have not been able to support the business.

As sad as it is to see Pier 1 Imports close down, people have been cherishing the major sales the store has been having.

“They’ve been having a lot of sales, and my mom just got me a nice stand for my bedroom,” said Thomas.  “I’m also waiting for the divider screens to go on sale some more.”

Over the past couple of weeks since the prices were cut in half, many local residents have been going through the store’s selection and taking advantage of the cheap prices.

Shopping at Pier 1 is not the only part of the local store that will be missed, but also the enjoyment of looking through their products will be, as well.

“I like to touch the pillows and blankets because they’re so soft,” said Sergent.  “I also liked to sit in the bean bag chairs because they were really comfortable.”

Pier 1 Imports will be greatly missed around this area, but luckily the whole company isn’t completely closing down.
