Natalie Womack is a freshman writer on the Courier staff. She spends her time outside of the classroom playing multiple sports for the school, as well as for club teams. Womack also enjoys hanging out with friends and family. This year she is looking forward to meeting new people and creating articles.

Cheer Team Stunts into New Season

Freshman Bella Bauer and sophomore Joie Phillips perfect Bauer´s handstand during a practice in mid-December. The cheer team uses many techniques to memorize the choreography of their routines; however, for some, like senior Arielle Wilson, practice and repetition are the answer. "I personally do not have any techniques for remembering choreography or anything," Wilson said. "For me, I think that it is all about the dedication, practice, and hard-work you put in which allows one to thrive." Junior Cassidy Derkosh appreciates how the captains use technology to help the girls. "To memorize choreography, I ask my captains about the motions if I am not 100% sure about it," Derkosh said. Junior Cassidy Derkosh is supported by several teammates as part of the cheer routine. The team works hard to communicate effectively when things go wrong. "We all understand that it is truly a team effort," Wilson said. "In order for stunts or anything to work we must all work together. If one person can not do their job it restricts the entire team. We have an understanding that we either fail or succeed together as a team. No one is by themselves. We are a very understanding and respectful team. We all listen to each others opinions/input, and if there is an issue we are able to civilly talk about what is going wrong and try different solutions to enable us all to accomplish our goals. Most of the time there is more than one problem in a stunt, and it is never solely one person's fault. Having so many different factors in a group of girls leaves an abundance of room for improvements and changes that might for an unknown reason just work better." Photograph by Natalie Womack

Sophomore Jenni Truong, junior Cassidy Derkosh, freshman Jocelyn Harper and freshman Autumn Miller wait eagerly in a line for the routine to start. The team has found ways to help calm their performance anxiety, according to freshman Peyton Frisch. "Sometimes when you do a new skill or something that has not really been working in-front of many people it can be scary,¨ Frisch said. "As long as you breathe, drink some water and try your best it will be ok. If it doesn't work out, you can always try again.¨ Photograph by Natalie Womack

Several teammates hold up junior Jaden Clapsadl as they practice one of their stunts from their routine. The team is very cautious with their 'flyer' safety. They are always making sure that the flyer is safe no matter the circumstances. ¨Cheerleading is one of the most injury prone sports, so it's hard to prevent them, but as a team, we prioritize flyer safety because they risk their life in the air, as well as any other person on the floor catching,¨ Clapsadl said. "As a team, we always say the flyer never hits the ground, any girl puts her life on the line, puts her body in the way for the girl. I've also found there is a way to fall, as well as making sure no one else gets hurt when you fall.¨ Photograph by Natalie Womack

The cheer team perfects their pyramid at a practice in mid-December. The group has learned a method of conflict resolution that works for them. ¨The past few months we aren't pointing fingers; we are giving advice," Clapsadl said.
