From kindergarten animal drawings to high school bridge concepts created perfectly to hold hundreds of tons and a competition for who can make the best bowl of salsa, the Susquehannock arts and technology fair aims to combine fun and appreciation for the creations of students from all over the district.
The arts and technology fair will be held this evening, April 29, in the commons, gymnasium and cafeteria of the high school from 5-8 p.m. The fair will showcase fine arts, graphic arts, photography, woodworking, metalworking, engineering and video production work. The culinary students will prepare and serve food for everyone who attends.
This year, the featured artist is a 2012 Susquehannock alumnus Nicole Daake, who owns her own photography company.
The fair will also include the Balsa and Salsa competition. Teams will work together to create a balsa wood bridge and a bowl of salsa. The bridge will be tested with weights, and the salsa will be judged by a panel of judges. The competition will begin at 7 p.m.
Co-director of the arts and tech fair and Susquehannock art teacher Wesley Myers sees the fair as a way for the district to realize the importance of student artwork.
“The fair is really about the only time of the year that we really get to showcase this stuff,” Myers said. “A lot of kids are in different music productions, and they have a couple plays, musicals and different orchestra concerts, but this is really sort of the behind the scenes, usually the quiet kids that are producing all year long, and this allows them to shine.”
Myers hopes the district comes out in force to the arts and technology fair.
“It’s just a great community activity,” Myers said. “Whether you are a parent, whether you’re a teacher, whether you have no direct connection to the building other than a community member, you get to see what we are producing. You get to see the talents of the next generation of kids coming out”
