For a lot of people, spring sports are just another sign of the warmer weather arriving. For others, it means electric lacrosse games, star-studded track and field championships and exciting boys volleyball matches.
Spring sports officially kick off on March 2, but there is still a lot happening until the games and practices begin. All spring sports teams, except track and field, will hold tryouts on the first two or three days of the beginning of the season. After tryouts end, the teams will be finalized and full-length practices will begin.
Boys lacrosse begins their regular season on March 16, when they go on the road to take on Lower Dauphin. Girls lacrosse begins at Red Land on March 18. Track and Field has their first meet at York Suburban on March 19. Baseball begins March 9 at Big Spring. The first softball game is at Donegal on March 11. Boys tennis starts their season at home against Spring Grove on March 11. Boys volleyball will have their first match at Spring Grove on March 16.
Head Athletic Director Matthew Blandin is confident in the coaches this year and is excited to see what they can do.
“A lot of the coaches are returning,” Blandin said. “I’ve heard great things about all of the coaches, and then, especially in the spring, I am just looking forward to what they are going to do with the teams.”
Blandin is also excited to see the capabilities of this year’s rosters.
“I’m looking for the teams to compete,” Blandin said. “I just want them to give their best effort, play to the best of their ability and just continue to grow and learn as they progress through the season. I’ve been doing this for a number of years, and a lot of times people ask me how I look at programs, and I’m always looking at improvement from the beginning of the season to the end,… just learning that’s a major part of educational athletics.”
