Consisting of thrills, drama, comedy, and scandals,”The Housemaid” has emerged from the growingly famous bestseller book series by Freida McFadden.
The movie was recently released on Dec. 19, 2025, with a 4.5/5 star rating according to Amazon Prime Video.
It stars famous actors Sydney Sweeney (“Euphoria” and “Anyone But You”), Amanda Seyfried (“Mean Girls” and “Jennifer’s Body”), Michele Morrone (“365 Days” Trilogy) and Brandon Sklenar (“It Ends With Us”).
Fans argue that Sweeney’s acting did not meet their expectations, while other actors, like Seyfried and Sklenar, acted phenomenally.
The movie starts off by taking a look at Mille’s (Sweeney’s character) tragic story of a girl needing a fresh start. She gets offered a job as a housemaid for Nina (Seyfried’s character) and Andrew Winchester (Sklenar’s character). Millie sees Nina’s crazy, irrational, and rude behavior the longer she stays at their house. Andrew is seen to be the only person in the house who offers Millie kindness, until the truth begins to come clear. Nina and Andrew’s true intentions are revealed through a thrilling plot twist, leaving the viewers wanting more and waiting for the sequel to be released.
The plot twist of the story was something that most fans, who have not read the book, couldn’t have seen coming. Going into the theaters to watch the movie without having some background of what it is about makes that plot twist even more thrilling. This is a movie that leaves one walking out of the theaters replaying what they’ve just watched, connecting all the dots from the beginning, adding up to the ending.
Continuing in this line of thinking, senior Mackenzie Turk highlights the impact of the film’s storyline.
“The Housemaid was a great movie,” Turk said. “It was intense and built the story very well to get to the plot twist. A small downside would be that I hadn’t read the book prior to watching the film, so I had no clue what to expect from the movie.”
Furthermore, at the start of the movie, Seyfried’s excellent acting skills are shown by making her seem insane and crazy. Her character, Nina Winchester, flips out and throws kitchen items across the room because Millie, her and Andrew’s housemaid, accidentally threw away her work notes when cleaning. Her behavior is shown to be unpredictable, unsettling and frantic. At the end of the movie, the audience understands why her character acted the way she did.
Continuing that performance, Sklenar’s outstanding acting skills are shown in the beginning as the sweet, kind, caring, gentle man who takes care of his crazy wife because of how much he loves her. He ends up catching feelings for Millie and starts secretly pursuing her. After Amanda leaves, his acting at the end of the movie shows the truth, shocking and wowing the viewers.
Building on these statements, senior Julia Saidel shares her similar thoughts on the film.
“I really enjoyed the physical thrill of the movie, and I think that Amanda and Brandon did a phenomenal job acting,” Saidel said. “I don’t necessarily dislike Sydney Sweeney’s acting, but she lacked emotion. However, the ending of the movie played out well and was even more enjoyable to know that there will be a sequel since it ends on a good cliffhanger.”
However, Sweeney truly did not live up to expectations. Her acting skills lacked emotional depth, and although she was comedic at the end of the movie, her facial expressions stayed very flat. Her character was supposed to serve a big role in creating a more empathetic, scared, emotional and angry environment in a lot of the scenes she was in. Unfortunately, she did not live up to those standards, which upset many viewers.
Despite the movie’s imperfections, The Housemaid was a very entertaining, thrilling and fun movie to watch. The movie keeps the viewer thinking about it even after the credits roll, especially with leaving us on a cliffhanger about an upcoming sequel . Ultimately, the movie is worth downloading a subscription to either Netflix or Amazon Prime. I give this movie a 3.5/5 warrior feathers rating overall.
