In the heart of autumn’s chill, Field of Screams awakens with killer clowns and skeletons in every path. The air is thick with smoke and screams of the people who come in and encounter the terrors that lie ahead. Upon walking in, your nerves start to tingle as figures lurk, ready to turn your simple night into your worst nightmare.

Field of Screams is a seasonal haunted attraction located in Mountville, PA. It offers four haunted attractions, a hayride and three haunted houses. They also have live music, food, axe throwing and five minute escape rooms.

Attending Field of Screams this fall, here is this Courier reporter’s ratings on its attractions’ scare factors.

Den of Darkness

This is the home of all the blood thirsty creatures that roam around at night. Halls filled with dead bodies and insects as big as your arm are displayed all around you as you try to navigate through the dark hallways. As you try to find your way out, you get frightened left and right by the monsters that seek shelter there.

I absolutely loved how they made everything seem so real and lifelike. The dead bodies on display not only looked real, but they also had that decomposition smell. The actors really interact with you a lot more and sometimes try to take you away from your group. Out of all the attractions here at Field of Screams, this is my all time favorite attraction. Whether it be because of how they placed everything or how at one point it is completely pitch black, this attraction was scary, fun, and worthwhile.

Haunted Hayride

As you go from stop to stop on the hayride, one will notice that the actors do not really try to interact with you as much as they did last year. Nothing changed about it to make it better; in fact, it’s the same props, same scares, and same scenes that have been used in previous years. They need to change some of the components up to make it scarier instead of the same old pieces that many people have already experienced before.

Frightmare Asylum

The moment you set foot into the asylum, you are immediately met with mayhem. Patients roam around as you try to find a way out. The residents taunt you, and doctors try to get you to stay with them for eternity. You hear screams and pleading cries from the rooms that are next. On your way out, you encounter a man with a chainsaw who chases you out of the asylum, making your heart race.

This is definitely one of my favorite attractions to go through at Field of Screams. I really enjoyed how the scare actors interacted with you more here. It felt like you were actually in an asylum because of how they had random actors walking around and yelling insults at you.

Nocturnal Wasteland

As the zombie children make an attempt at scaring you, you will get no chills down your spine- at all. While you’re walking through the woods, nothing jumps out at you. The actors just kind of put minimal effort into following you to scare you. Overall, you can take your young children through this, and they wouldn’t be scared at all. It seems the scare actors in this attraction just weren’t as invested in their job compared to the other years that I’ve gone to. This feature was truly a little disappointing.

Overall, 2 out of the 4 attractions were worthwhile and fright-filled, which isn’t too bad, but it definitely could’ve been better. In the end, I hope to see some improvements for next year.
