How to choose your best prom hairstyle

It’s that time of year again with nail appointments, spray tans, trips to Renaissance, and, of course, perfecting a hairstyle for the big night.

Sure pinning 200 pictures on Pinterest can spark ideas, but there are many things to take into consideration when choosing a prom hairstyle.

One’s dress is probably the most important factor. Halter dresses or dresses that have elaborate gems by the neckline should be paired with a hairdo that doesn’t cover the detailing or try to compete with the design of the dress.

Sometimes updos scare a lot of girls because they feel it may look frumpy or uptight, but with the enormous amount of variety in updos, there is a great chance that the perfect hair for a cohesive prom look is out there.

Updos are always very practical for prom, especially for those really big on dancing. The heat really gets to people on the dance floor, and not having the annoyance of hair constantly sticking to one’s face is a good way to achieve a more carefree experience.

Senior Jeanette Wilson is opting for this look.

“I’m getting an updo because my dress has an open back,” said Wilson. “I’m going to get it done by the lady who usually does my hair at Backstage Hair [in Shrewsbury].”

Looking through pictures on Google images, Pinterest, and previous hairstyles of other students on Facebook are all very good options when finding the perfect hairstyle.

A strapless dress or very thinly strapped dress nearly always looks good with a simple curl-down-do or even a half up-half-down style.

Jazzing up just plain curls with small flowers, glitter clips, or barrettes also add a sense of uniqueness to the most sought after styles.

Senior Natalie Martin decided to go for a down-do.

“I’m getting it done at Holiday Hair,” said Martin. “I’m getting a waterfall braid and [am] having my hair down.”

For those who want to save money after buying that dream dress, doing one’s own hair is an excellent idea.

Try to opt for simple styles that don’t require numerous expensive salon products. Also, make sure to practice the hairstyle a couple of times before prom night just to make sure the style is doable.

Senior Lauren Mankin is doing her own hair for prom.

“I’m not getting my hair done professionally,” said Mankin. “I’m doing it myself because I’m getting it dyed. I am straightening it and am putting it in a  pony tail so that it looks really pretty with my dress.”

If you decide to go to an expert to get your hair done, make sure it is a reliable hair stylist that knows exactly the look that one is aiming to get. Try bringing in a picture to show to the stylist in order to achieve the perfect look.

So whether one finds her hairstyle on Google, gets it done professionally, or does it at home, a good deal of planning is always the perfect solution to avoiding any hairdo mishaps on the night of the biggest dance of the year.
