Prom royalty was crowned on May 10; however, the crowned winners were surprised by the results.
Senior Carley VanLuit was selected as prom queen, senior Tony Piermatteo was prom king, junior Alexis Anelli, prom princess and junior Tyler Ritz, prom prince.
Prom king, queen, prince and princess have been an annual tradition for Susquehannock. After the senior and junior classes selected three candidates for each award, a final ballot was made, displaying the boys and girls moving on to the final round of voting. From that ballot, one student is selected for each position, and the winners are announced halfway through prom.
Junior Alexis Anelli was crowned as Susquehannock’s 2014 prom princess.
“I did not see being selected as prom princess coming,” said Anelli. “I was in the running with so many other nice girls, so it was unpredictable.”
With the final ballots including anywhere from three to six names, it is easy to be uncertain about who the winners would be. The prince, junior Tyler Ritz, was also caught off guard by the results.
“I feel very special because it’s a once in a lifetime thing,” said Ritz. “I honestly didn’t think I was even going to make it [on the final ballot]. I always wanted to be something special, but prom prince wasn’t really an option. I guess now that I am, I think it’s pretty awesome.”
Prom royalty is seen by many students as an honor. It is sometimes portrayed in movies as a little girl’s dream. While this year’s queen and princess both view being crowned as flattering, the idea that they would win never crossed their minds.
“I’ve always seen being selected as prom princess, homecoming queen or prom queen as really cool,” said Anelli. “I never really saw myself getting it, but I always saw it as something really flattering and awesome.”
Although being crowned may have been the student’s highlight of the dance, other factors played a role in their amazing night. With this year including a new venue, every student was experiencing prom at The Valley Mansion for the first time.
Prom queen senior Carley VanLuit preferred her prom at the The Valley Mansion.
“The whole atmosphere of the mansion was a lot better than past years’,” said VanLuit.
The Valley Mansion provided the students with a two hour long buffet; however, the dancing began shortly after everyone’s arrival. The students quickly took photos with their friends and got on the dance floor. With over three hours of dancing, it is understandable that it could be most students’ favorite part of the night.
Senior Tony Piermatteo, crowned prom king, had the most fun on the dance floor.
“I had a good time dancing with the girls,” said Piermatteo.
Even without the crown, the four winners would have still had an unforgettable night. For two of them, it was their last high school dance, but for all four, it was one that they will never forget.
