The Walking Dead season four finale was definitely one to remember, despite being preceded by seven episodes lacking in excitement and meaning.
The episode was focused on Rick’s faction of the group, which consists of himself, Carl and Michonne. They are confronted by the gang Daryl had earlier joined, led by Joe, and are attacked. Daryl is beaten by his own group because he sticks up for his friends. Rick attempts to grab the gun but cannot get it. As Joe pulls him close and says, “What are you gonna do now, sport?”, Rick bites him in the neck, and rips out his jugular.
After the fight turns in Rick’s favor, he slaughters the remaining members of Joe’s group. They move on to Terminus, a supposed safe place for all, with everyone clearly shaken. When they arrive at the apparent safehaven, Rick discovers that the citizens of Terminus have taken Glenn and Maggie’s items. He confronts the people, and they begin shooting.
Rick, Carl, Michonne and Daryl are forced into a trailer, where they find Glenn, Maggie and company. Rick exclaims that they will feel foolish when they realize they are messing with the wrong people.
All in all, the episode kept my interest piqued and answered several questions. While I did predict that Terminus would turn out poorly for the group, it ended up being very creepy. During the chase, Rick is pushed into a room lit with candles that reminded me of a cult. It begged the question, what are these people?
The most exciting and jaw-dropping moment was when Rick bit Joe’s neck. Director Greg Nicotero does an excellent job shocking an audience that has come to expect anything. The frenzied environment of the fight keeps the viewer desperate to find out what will happen next.
