The malls in York, Pa. have experienced success, decline and redevelopment in the past several decades.
The York Mall was the first of many to open in the area, anchored by JCPenney and now-defunct department stores Montomery Ward and Hochschild-Kohn. The 1968 mall would remain popular until a second mall would open in East York, the York Galleria. College and career coordinator Matt Amberman used to visit the York Mall and remembers the welcoming environment. “You didn't feel like you had to leave,” Amberman said. “It was very comfortable. Atriums and glass ceilings and fountains and [the malls] in York were loaded with them.” Photograph Courtesy of York Blog
