The Local History Club’s first year has kicked off with detailed research, participation in October Fun Night and a trip to the Glen Rock Historical Society Museum.

History teacher Audra Cabrera runs the club and has the goal to make an impact on the public.

“One of the goals of the club, not my club but our club, is that not only do I want my students to learn about local history and want them to keep that alive and share that with other people, but I also want it to help the community as well,” Cabrera said. “Unfortunately, a lot of people who work at these local museums are aging, and they have a love for their local towns and community… it would be neat to spark that in someone who could eventually take that over.”

Cabrera has shaped the club into an exciting experience for all the members, while keeping the education aspect and making everything engaging.

“The whole goal of the club is both [education and fun],” Cabrera said. “People who join the club are there because they’re interested to begin with, so I’m hoping that it’s somewhat fun for them and I think they’re serious about the topic and I hope we just have fun while we’re doing it.”

Sophomore Brianna Myles, a member of the local history club, enjoys the atmosphere of the club and that history appeals to other members as much as it does for her.

“There’s only like six of us right now, but it is comfortable,” Myles said. “Everybody in the club seems to also have a pretty high interest in [the history and club].”

So far, the club has done a lot considering it’s their first year, and they have participated in school events such as October Fun night and conducted detailed research. The club only meets once a month and has already toured the Glen Rock Historical Society Museum.

“The majority of my local history club members were able to then see all of the self-sustaining businesses that Glen Rock had to offer,” Cabrera said. “Glen Rock was once a town that didn’t need any other towns; it had everything in it that it absolutely needed, and the students in the club were able to see that through the evidence of the museum.”

Another member respects Cabrera for starting this opportunity. Freshman Evan Boyce treasures the academic

advantages the Local History Club has given him.

“It’s given me more information on historical events we’re learning about in regular history class, and it also gives me a perspective on what the town was like in the past,” Boyce said.

As the club continues to do great things, the dedicated group hopes to share snippets of information they’ve learned from the journeys they’ve gone on, marking just the beginning of what they will accomplish.
