The National Honor Society has official, new officers for the year.
Seniors Vickey Chen, Ava Lund and Ava Silliman will taketheir places as officers. Chen we will be the president, Lund will be vice president and Sillimen will be secretary.
This year, each officer gave a speech on Dec. 3 with words of wisdom for upcoming members. Chen, the president, spoke about scholarships. Lund, vice president, focused on leadership. Silliman spoke on character.
Some officers are simply happy about their new responsibilities.
¨I was truly surprised and honored when I received this position,” Silliman said. “It made me realize that my peers view me as a role model within SHS, and it has motivated me to continue working to support the students around me.¨
Some others feel more stressed.
¨Truthfully, it felt like a 10-pound weight was lifted off my shoulders, and then it was replaced with a 15-pound weight,” Chen said. “Though I was overjoyed to find out I had won the position, I understood there were now greater expectations and responsibilities.¨
Being an NHS officer can really help with one’s future in general, whether it’s college or other career paths.
¨ [The position] can be helpful with college applications and acceptances,” Lund said. “While in college, it will be helpful to already have experience and exposure to different leadership opportunities. Beyond school, this opportunity will help me to learn valuable lessons like responsibility and leadership, which are important life skills to possess.¨
According to Silliman, when colleges look for people to accept into their school, they look for aspects that make people stand out. Being an NHS officer shows that you apply yourself and push to always be above and beyond those set expectations.
Not only does it affect the futures of the officers, it can also
change how they handle their high school career.
¨I think this will allow me to continue setting an example both academically and in my extracurriculars at SHS, and I hope that NHS inductees will see me as someone that they can look to for advice and collaboration,¨ Silliman said.
As the school year progresses, these are some of the seniors that people look up to.
