The Student Council Tab Collection will take place around Dec. 3 and will continue for the rest of the school year.
Done in collaboration with the Ronald McDonald House, the tab collection will help to donate to families with children in Hershey Hospital.
Grade 9-12 will be able to participate in this collection competition, using bins found around the school in areas like the cafeteria, library, and the commons. The teachers will also have envelopes in their classrooms to collect the tabs.
The Ronald McDonald Houses of Central Pennsylvania (RMHC-CP) runs this recycling program in partnership with Consolidated Scrap Resources, Inc.
“…Consolidated Scrap Resources, Inc., buys the tabs and sends a check to us,” RMHC-CP said. ” They generously donate their pick-up and handling services, bringing in vital funds that help keep families together. Since the program’s inception, over $285,000 has been raised through recycling these tiny tabs! Approximately 1,400 tabs equal one pound. On average, we receive over 2,000 pounds of tabs per month which equals almost 3 million tabs!”
Adviser Andrew Warren, co-adviser Alison Altemose and vice-president Kendall Woods have been working with the student council to print and hang up the posters around the school.
“It’s really easy, and for the common good,” Altemose said.
This collection challenge will be a great way to give back.
“[The competition is for] students across grade 9-12 to not only compete against each other, but to rally together for a good cause,” Warren said.
The competition will help to provide for families with kids at Hershey Hospital who are not financially able to travel back and forth.
“There are always people struggling in our community, so just to provide a little bit of extra help to those who might not be in our community directly….… it just helps bring everybody together, and it’s always nice to know that you have contributed to something bigger,” Woods said.
Keep an eye out for these bins and envelopes around the school.
