Literary Magazine Members Collaborate, Share Scary Stories

The Literary magazine’s scary stories make their way to Susquehannock during the Halloween season as students submit their spooky tales.

Adviser of the Literary Magazine Amanda Burris and co-editors-in-chief junior Sophie Sedgley and senior Joseph Tutz have led the group’s creation of the latest Halloween-inspired prompt.

“(We) get together as a club, and we talk about… things that are [kind of] focused on in the month…, as a whole … we feel like people really get into scary stories,” Burris said. “We figured this would be a really great…, writing prompt to get people interested in submitting pieces.”

Burris explains how the scary stories writing theme is simply a starting point to inspire students to write.

“To submit you don’t have to stick to that theme,” Burris said “It’s just to… get people- hopefully- inspired to write and submit stories.”

Tutz has many future goals for the club.

We plan on improving the magazine and inclusion for the future of the magazine,” Tutz said. “…we are also actively seeking out more submissions from students who are interested. We think that expanding our pool of submissions will improve the quality and diversity of the submissions we receive.”

Sedgley, who started at the Lit Mag as a freshman, brought up the plan for the magazine.

“Lit Mag plans to help students get work published, get more submissions than ever and even help students find resources/competitions they can partake in outside of school,” Sedgely said.

Burris also shares how the Lit Mag is “thinking about having a writing competition at some point in the year…” and to stay tuned for details.

Scary story submissions will be uploaded to the Literary Magazine Website at the end of the school year.

Any submissions, including both art and writing, can be sent to [email protected]

“We would love for anybody to submit, you know, not just scary stories but just any type of writing or art, poetry, or photography,” Burris said.
