The marching band is helping audience members reflect on life’s struggles this competition season with a take on Mozart’s life for their competition show entitled“Fractured.”
Sophomore Asher Gantz, a member of color guard, presented the theme in steps.
“There are three movements,” Gantz said. “Each movement depicts a piece of Mozart’s life.”
Those movements are about his relationship and about him falling in love with a girl. The theme was inspired and comes from composer Rob Stine, who has his own show called “Shattered.” The band has been playing his music for a few years.
Christain Poole, who has been the band director since 2007, took sound into account when giving the show a title.
“Instead of calling the show ‘Shattered,’ we called it ‘Fractured,’” Poole said. “‘Fractured’ worked more with the different sounds and related more with Mozart’s life than shattering sounds.”
Each week the band competes with different schools.
“It is not about winning,” Poole said. “It is about competing amongst ourselves.”
Senior Angelina Forrester, who has played synthesizer in the marching band for five years, is excited for this year’s plans for the band.
“Many exciting things are happening…,” Forrester said. “…visiting Universal Studios in February for a parade and workshop. At the end of October, the marching band is very excited to be part of the Bands of America Regional Competition at the University of Maryland.
Competitions go into November, and last weekend’s competition at Exeter High School in Reading, PA gave the group a win at first place.
“It is nice to be able to get out of our comfort zone and see other groups bigger and better than us,” Poole said.
