The King Of Hearts Dance was held in the main gym where students brought in canned food goods to support their favorite candidate on Saturday, February 9th, from 7:00-10:00 PM.
Business education teacher Kellin McCullough assisted student council in running the event.
“All proceeds, including the cans and money, were donated to Southern Community Services and are put to good use to help those in need,” said McCullough. “I was expecting more students to attend the dance this year due to its rising attendance over the past three years.”
Junior Derek Rodgers attended and had been looking forward to the dance.
“I like the idea of our school having the King Of Hearts dance. It’s a chance to almost have another homecoming, and lets you see your friends,” said Rodgers. “I don’t think a lot of people came to the dance because they don’t think its cool.”
Sophomore Kelsey Choate also attended the dance with her friends.
“I was excited for the dance and think that it was a fun. It was a great way to give back to those that are in need,” said Choate.
Candidates collected cans and money in order to get points. Each dollar was worth 3 points and each can worth 1. The candidate that had the most points by the time of the dance won the title of King of Hearts.
That candidate this year was Robert Pugaczewski. Pugaczewski won by a huge margin with over 1,000 points.
Student council made decorations, organized a pep rally and spirit week, coordinated with the candidates, counted cans, and worked on advertising in preparation for the dance.
McCullough was concerned about attendance for the dance.
“With all the work that the student council has put in I was hoping that more people would have come,” said McCullough.
