Pitch for a Cure Raises Awareness for Cancer

The softball team brought awareness for pancreatic cancer at their Pitch for a Cure fundraising event on May 4.
This game’s proceeds went to the Lustgarten foundation (https://www.lustgarten.org/).

Senior Jessica Fox had the idea for the event in memory of her grandparents.

“It’s to raise money for pancreatic cancer. Both my grandparents died from pancreatic cancer, six months apart, so I made a fundraiser to raise money for it. It’s the first one, so we’ll see how it goes,” Fox said.

Junior Allyson Koller and the other members of her team have done their best to support and help Fox with the event.

“I’m a really good friend of Jessica’s, and we know this means a lot to her. I’s affected her a lot. We don’t really have a lot of fundraisers for softball, but we thought it would be a good idea to include something to raise money for an organization,” said Koller.

Fox said that organizing the event wasn’t easy.

“It was a little difficult to organize. I didn’t really know what I was doing, so it was a lot of trial and error. I definitely think I should’ve started some things earlier, because a lot of it requires approval. I came up with the idea, then I talked to the coaches about it. They said they were onboard, and then we had to get Mr. Keeney’s approval and all sports boosters approval. Then I went and I dropped off a bunch of sponsor letters to get businesses to sponsor, and then once I had the list of sponsors we purchased t-shirts. The players will be wearing special jerseys for the game; we’ll have a bake sale, basket raffle, and music,” said Fox.

Junior Anna Bryan said that with the amount of people pitching in, it wasn’t as difficult to organize the event.

“We had a lot of people coming to help. If it was just a few of us it would be harder, because we wouldn’t be able to get such a reach out, but we had coaches, family, and all the girls there, so it wasn’t that hard,” said Bryan.

Fox has high hopes for the event.

“I hope it goes well. I want to raise as much money as we can, because it’s all going to the Lustgarten foundation. They funded a study that found that eight major types of cancer can be found through a blood test. I want to raise awareness,” said Fox.

Koller has the same goal of raising awareness.

“I hope that we not only raise a lot of money, but I hope people gain more of an awareness for pancreatic cancer and cancer itself. It can just pop out of nowhere, and you don’t even know it’s going to affect you until it does. The event mostly focused on Jessica’s grandparents who passed away, but I think it impacts everyone in some kind of way.”

The game went into the 8th inning with the final score being 4-3. The softball team raised a total of 2390 dollars.
