‘Star Wars: the Last Jedi’ Thrills Audiences

By Josh Amara, Reporter

Perhaps the biggest film of the year, Star Wars: The Last Jedi does not disappoint, delivering on its promise to succeed its predecessor not only in the box office but with audiences alike.

Immediately, the Last Jedi immerses us into its sci-fi world right from the start, the Last Jedi begins where Star Wars: The Force Awakens leaves off.

The story opens with the Resistance fleeing from the First Order in their star ships,  just barely staying ahead of them. Throughout the movie, this continues as the plot flashes back and forth to Rey’s Jedi training with Luke, the Resistance escaping from the First Order, and Finn and Rose trying to find the expert key breaker to save the Resistance.

All the characters eventually come together in the last two acts of the movie when they help the Resistance escape the First Order in one of the coolest fights in cinematic history as Luke faces against Kylo.

The Last Jedi builds upon the characters introduced in The Force Awakens by creating new dynamics and more complex and compelling characters, like Kylo Ren, who is torn between his family and his loyalty to the Sith, adding more depth to his character.

However, many fans of the original Star Wars trilogy were nothing short of outraged by this new sudden change to the “space opera.”

In its endeavor to create an entirely new story for this generation, Star Wars has unintentionally alienated its past fans by following more along the lines of a modern Sci-Fi movie such as the recent Star Trek films, shedding its more family oriented “space opera” roots for more modern Sci-Fi action adventure film which past fans of the movies don’t seem to enjoy.

However, critics and new fans of the new films will be exceedingly entertained with its blend of Sci-Fi action, storytelling and comedy.

The Last Jedi was directed by Rian John and features the likes of John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver and Mark Hamill reprising his role as Luke Skywalker from George Lucas’s 1977 classic Star Wars: The New Hope.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ opening weekend pulled in 248 million dollars domestically, in comparison to the Last Jedi which opened with an estimated 220 million in its first weekend in the U.S, which would be the largest of all 2017 movie releases.

There is no denying the success of the Last Jedi critically and commercially and fans can only wait until 2019 for the conclusion to this new trilogy.
