SMS Takes the Stage for the Holidays

By Brittany Boone, Reporter

There were bows and strings in the auditorium this week, but it had nothing to do with crafts.

For three days, the orchestra and choir ensembles of Southern Middle School practiced to perform their Choral and Orchestra concert this past Wednesday.

Monday’s practice was for the orchestra, Tuesday was for the choir, and Wednesday morning’s dress rehearsal featured both.

Then, Wednesday night, the choir, led by choral conductor  Jay Althouse and the orchestra, led by orchestra conductor Zachary Levi took to the stage for the SMS holiday concert.

Together, the two ensembles performed a variety of holiday-themed pieces to showcase  what the students are capable of.

Within choir, there is a select group called “Inspiration,” and similarly, the Orchestra’s select strings make up the chamber orchestra, called “Tuned Chaos.”

Each group had a separate piece to perform that allowed the audience to recognize their particular talents.

‘Inspiration’ performed two pieces, one featuring American sign language, and the chamber orchestra performed one piece, a Charles Dickens inspired holiday medley.

Parents, family, and friends all showed up to give a wide range of support for the students.

Wednesday night’s auditorium was nearly a full house, and the middle school gave the audience a warm welcome with the harmonic sounds of the holiday.
