After receiving raving reviews, the cast and crew of Pippin has moved on to the York County Encore Awards.

The Encores is where high schools in York County showcase a portion of their musical that they performed at their school. Participants are given an opportunity to win awards, such as scholarships, for their seniors.

Senior Shannon Moran is excited about Pippin going to the Encores, especially since the SHS theater was unable to attend last year.

“I’m excited to go because last year we didn’t get to go for Mary Poppins,” said Moran. “I’m really excited because it’s a new show we’re performing.”

This year, SHS theater performed “Love Song” with Catherine and Pippin, along with a scene from the finale. Each school was allowed 8 minutes to perform with a maximum of 2 numbers.

Junior Lina Waterstradt enjoyed being part of the Pippin cast and was ready to perform at the Encores.

“I’m very excited. Michelle, our dance lady, thinks we’ve got a good chance, and we really want to beat everyone, so I hope everything goes good,” said Waterstradt.

Senior Kurt Eckenrode, who played the Leading Player in the musical, is eager to perform at the Encores this year.

“I’m really excited. I’ve never had a lead at the Encore Awards, so it’s pretty exciting to be able to perform that,” said Eckenrode. “I think we’ll do really well. [Pippin] is different because there are three schools doing Mary Poppins, and three schools doing The Little Mermaid. It’s going to be a major difference. It’s a happy-go-lucky show, and it’s a show about death. It’ll be fun.”

Besides the thrilling songs and spectacular effects, Pippin showed how well the cast handled their characters.

“I really liked Pippin. I liked his story and all those struggles that he went through, but he still managed to live a normal life after everything,” said Moran. “He pushed through what people thought of him.”

From setting up the stage to performing the musical, the cast and crew had a lot of fun with the show on stage and behind the curtains.

“It was phenomenal. It was one of the best experiences of my life,” said Eckenrode. “It’s all the friendships you make over the years. It’s what makes it hard to leave behind your senior year, but some of the friendships I have I’ll have for the rest of my life because of this. I just love the theater for that.”

The Encore Awards took place at Central York High School on Sunday, April 24 at 2:30 p.m.
