Front-Running Republicans Vie for Nomination
December 10, 2015
There’s always something to focus on in American politics, but with impending presidential primaries with no incumbent running, American voters are starting to make important decisions about who they want to run this country. Although the field is flooded with candidates running, there are a few candidates that actually hold a chance to be nominated by the party.
Businessman Donald Trump
Famous for his various business ventures, Trump has become an extremely controversial figure in the 2016 presidential campaign.
Every week seems to be a new scandal for Trump, such as the controversy surrounding his comments about immigration, yet he has hit a nerve with the American people about how politically correct Americans demand their world to be.
Despite how much some Americans hate Trump, he is still leading many GOP polls with his slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
Dr. Ben Carson
Dr. Carson has only recently transitioned from neurosurgery to the political stage.
From the black community, Carson is criticized for not discussing racial relations often, and from other communities, he is criticized for some holes in his political knowledge and his demure presence.
Carson, however, is praised by his followers for his pro-life stance on abortion, his anti-ObamaCare stance on healthcare, and his support of the Second Amendment.
Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush
Part of the Bush legacy in American politics, Jeb Bush has taken the political spotlight for his family in this race.
Bush has put emphasis on the War on Terror, giving back to American veterans, and reforming the current healthcare system in his campaign. However, his father’s and brother’s conservative legacies and past presidencies may be a disability for his campaign.
Still in the top five GOP candidates, Bush seems to be a possible contender.
US Senator (FL) Marco Rubio
A son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio has only recently become a big name for the GOP.
Rubio has proven that he is not afraid of a fight, recently criticizing the media for being too left and favoring Democratic candidates.
In his own campaign, Rubio places importance on family values, maintaining the Second Amendment, and supporting specific American groups, such as veterans and farmers.
US Senator (TX) Ted Cruz
Cruz, a conservative Texan, recently scored an eight percent popularity rating in a GOP poll, which, considering the amount of candidates, is a decent poll.
As a candidate, Cruz has worked hard to repeal ObamaCare, support the Second Amendment, and advocate for Christian ideals in America. Because his father was oppressed in Cuba, Cruz supports American freedom.
Businesswoman Carly Fiorina
Former CEO of Hewlett-Packard Carly Fiorina represents Republican women in the 2016 election.
Because Fiorina is not a career politician, she holds a different appeal to voters, and she has not shied away from combating her other female opponent, Hillary Clinton.
Fiorina’s chances at becoming the Republican nominee look slim, but she has definitely affected the female population’s political ideas.
Other Republicans running include NJ governor Chris Christie, former VA governor Jim Gilmore, US Senator from SC Lindsey Graham, former AR governor Mike Huckabee, OH governor John Kasich, former NY governor George Pataki, US Senator from KY Rand Paul, and former US Senator from PA Rick Santorum.
