There’s always something to focus on in American politics, but with impending presidential primaries with no incumbent running, American voters are starting to make important decisions about who they want to run this country. On the Democratic side of primaries, there is a short list of three candidates vying for the official party nomination.

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

Married to former President of the United States Bill Clinton, Clinton has become politically successful in her own right since the end of her husband’s term.

In her campaign, Clinton has shown herself to be far left, supporting abortion, gun control and the recent Supreme Court case legalizing homosexual marriage.

Clinton’s campaign has been peppered with scandals such as “email-gate,” in which Clinton used a personal email while serving as Secretary of State. Yet, Clinton’s passionate followers seem largely unaffected by these scandals as she remains the leading candidate.

US Senator (VT) Bernie Sanders

A proclaimed Socialist, Sanders has gained popularity mainly on college campuses and with other young Americans.

With the phrase “Nobody who works 40 hours a week should be living in poverty,” Sanders is an advocate for economic equality in America, free college tuition and fighting climate change.

Sanders remains far behind Clinton in the polls, but he has gained much more attention than most Socialists do in America.

Former MD Governor Martin O’Malley

A lesser-known 2016 presidential candidate, O’Malley remains far behind both Clinton and Sanders in national polls.

During his term as Maryland’s governor, O’Malley passed bills to raise minimum wage to over ten dollars, give marriage equality, and illegalize gender identity discrimination.

Although his chances of being the Democratic nominee seem bleak, O’Malley has fifteen specific goals for the country as part of his presidential vision to be found here.
