SHS Takes on VSCO

By Emily Christian, Arts & Entertainment Editor

Say goodbye to Instagram and hello to VSCO.

VSCO may be the most internationally popular and used photography app, based on the fact that it appears to be the most downloaded app of the month.

While it’s considered a design app, it allows people to express themselves through sharing beautiful, compelling images. Many professional filters are provided to add dimension and to capture depth through photography.

People from all over the world upload their pictures to the VSCO Grid. Portraits of people and landscapes are the most popular type of photos that can be found while scrolling through the VSCO feed, whether it is based on people you follow or it is curated by the VSCO company. People speak through the pictures they post; emotions and feelings are expressed and are captured by others.

Junior Mackenzie Gibson, a frequent VSCO user, appreciates the app and believes it offers a lot to photographers.

“VSCO is a way to upload pictures that can show artistic-ness. For many pictures, you can read and learn about the stories behind other people’s artwork,” said Gibson.

The pictures on this app do not always have to be shared to the Grid. Junior Danielle Moore uses this app to just edit her pictures.

“I do not take enough pictures to post on my Grid, but I love how VSCO allows people to personalize and enhance their photography. I edit all of my pictures on this app using the preset effects, and it really adds dimension to all of my pictures,” said Moore.

Unlike another widely used app, Instagram, VSCO does not focus on the amount of likes and followers people receive. This allows people to focus more on their work and does not influence people to post photos just to receive a large amount of likes or to satisfy the public eye. The success of the app is not portrayed by numbers, but by the quality of photos on the Grid.

Junior Kate LeBlanc thinks there are benefits to both VSCO and Instagram based on their differences.

“I like VSCO because it is a bunch of artsy pictures that you can allow people to see without ‘excessively posting’ like people do on Instagram. VSCO can be hard to use sometimes because it is hard to find people to follow because you can’t tag people, like on Instagram. I use VSCO all the time to share a majority of my pictures,” said LeBlanc.

The artsy world of VSCO is spreading throughout SHS, as more and more students discover it each day.
