What Happened at the Grammys this Year?

By Jake Smith, Assistant Editor-in-chief

The 2014 Grammys were a step in the right direction. The 2015 Grammys were different. Something was off about the show, but at least it was a somewhat-enjoyable mess. Here are the awards that should have been given out.

Largest Dress: Rihanna

Her gigantic pink dress was visible from far above the crowd. She really went for it. I’ll give her that.

Best/Worst Dressed: Joy Villa

Taking her inspiration from a construction site, musician/genius/weirdo Joy Villa arrived in orange fencing.

Most Confusing Hair: Tie – Iggy Azalea and Sia

Iggy has gotten tired of Twitter making fun of her; she’s now doing it herself. Iggy had her hair up in a braid thing all night and basically confused everyone. Sia also went big for her hair, opting for a huge wig. It didn’t make much sense.

Most Deserving Win: Sam Smith

The man can sing. It’s nice to see real talent win awards (I’m looking at you, Macklemore).

Most Distressing (Yet Arguably Deserved) Win: Beck

Beck didn’t have the album of the year. Let’s get that out of the way. The problem with his win is that while Morning Phase was great, so was Beyoncé. It’s comparing apples to oranges. Beck has deserved recognition for his work for years (Midnite Vultures is almost mandatory listening), so his win is very divisive, even for his fans. Beyoncé’s album is superior, but let’s let Beck enjoy his acclaim in peace.

Best Performance: Beyoncé

After the atrocious opening number by AC/DC and other disappointing performances (mostly because Kendrick Lamar wasn’t there this year), Beyoncé’s intro into Common and John Legend’s song “Glory” was a beautiful shift in mood. She even worked in a Ferguson reference.

Most Outdated: LL Cool J

Since when has LL Cool J been relevant? He still wears a newsboy cap! The Grammys can do better.

Best Presenter: Prince

In the best remark of the night, Prince validated the Black Lives Matter movement and stayed true to form, saying “Albums still matter. Like books and Black lives, albums still matter.”

Well, the Grammys are over for this year. Maybe 2016 will be less boring  and more hilarious.
