Twenty French students traveled to Rachel’s Café and Crêperie on January 15 to learn more about French cuisine and culture.

French teacher Stephanie South had been planning to take a select few of her students on a field trip to a café in Lancaster.

“[My purpose behind this trip was] to have [the students] experience French culture and get to try some of the French cuisine,” said South.

Amongst those twenty students, freshmen Gwen Bundy and Francesca Wright accompanied South and other French club members to this café. Both tagged along to enhance their knowledge of the language they are currently studying by experiencing a French environment first hand.

Bundy also looked at this opportunity as not only a way to better her knowledge, but also as an excuse to try some of the food she had only heard about in the time she had spent in French class and in French club.

“I’m hoping to come out of this having a better knowledge of French culture and the types of food they eat,” said Bundy. “I think hands on experiences and seeing things first hand are very important parts in a student’s education.”

While this was the very first time Bundy and Wright were given the opportunity to join South on this trip, it is also the very first time the club will be eating at Rachel’s Café and Crêperie due to a recent change in routine.

Wright, who shared many of the same opinions as Bundy, was greatly looking forward to other aspects of this trip besides learning.

“[I am most looking forward to] getting together with my friends and being able to eat something we all understand,” said Wright.

One of the most important lessons South was looking to pass along to her students was an appreciation of other cultures different from their own, which she continues to do by striving to create more hands on opportunities for her students.
