Obama’s second term: What’s next?

Since President Barack Obama was elected in 2009, he has been faced with numerous issues such as health care, bailouts, and rising unemployment rates; many wonder what he is going to do in his second term.

After his re-election, Obama stated that he was standing behind the gay marriage movement. He also got his health care bill from 2010 upheld in Congress with a 5 to 4 margin.

In the field of foreign policies, Obama has joined forces with European allies in an attempt to shut Iran off from receiving oil in order to prevent them from developing nuclear weapons.

Obama also ended the war in Iraq and plans to have most soldiers out of Afghanistan by mid-2013.

Pertaining to the Syrian conflict, Obama is refraining from too much involvement, after he, among other United Nations leaders, condemned the Syrian leader President Bashar al-Assad.

Involvement could lead to further conflict with Middle-Eastern countries and Russia.

History Teacher Matt Amberman is very aware of the numerous issues Obama is facing.

Amberman mentioned the 9/11 attacks on Libya before the election, which undermined Obama’s foreign policy stature.

“Iran is the key asset in overcoming issues in the middle east,” said Amberman.

Since his re-election, expectations have been raised due to his lack of progress in his first term.

The biggest plan that Obama has had approved is his idea for reformed healthcare, or Obamacare.

This new healthcare reform will provide for cheaper health insurance for all U.S. citizens. This plan does not replace Medicare or Medicade, if others prefer the latter. The bill will give seniors cheaper access to medicines, treatments, and procedures, according to obamacarefacts.com/obamacare-facts.php.

Obama also has a new mandate regarding birth control.

This bill, also known as the Affordable Care Act, makes birth control cheaper and easily accessible to young people. There will no longer be a required prescription in order to obtain birth control.

Senior Jeanette Wilson was quite pessimistic when it came to the question of cheaper and more easily accessible birth control being good or bad.

She believes that it will give teens a poor impression, increase teen sexual activity due to easier, cheaper availability, and pregnancy rates from misuse.

“With easier and cheaper access to birth control, I think it will do much more harm than good,” said Wilson.
