Warrior Soccer Falls Short in Counties

With boys varsity soccer holding the Division II title and girls soccer sharing their division title, both teams look to continue their success entering postseason.

Postseason for girls and boys soccer began Saturday, October 11 with the first round of counties. Eight teams from both girls and boys compete for the county title. The boys soccer teams were: Central York, Littlestown, Biglersville, Dallastown, Gettysburg, West York, Susquehannock and Spring Grove while the girls soccer teams were: Dallastown, Fairfield, York Suburban, Susquehannock, Central York, York Suburban, Dover and Northeastern.

After the first round on the 11th, the number of schools dwindled to four in boys and four in girls, Susquehannock being one in both. The other schools include for boys: Central, Gettysburg and Dallastown; and for girls: Dallastown, Central and Northeastern.

On Tuesday, October 14 both girls and boys competed with Dallastown. Dallastown was the Susquehannock girls’ most challenging threat, but they have been working for the county title since the beginning of the season.

Junior captain Maddy Mummert realizes that they were close to obtaining one of their team goals.

“Winning counties has been one of our goals because last year we didn’t even make it to postseason and this year since we made it to postseason – it’s really exciting,” said Mummert.

The boys are also determined to win more than the division this year.

According to senior captain Clay Ayers, the boys also had the county title on their list of goals.

“During the first week of practice, we set a goal to win the division, the county and then the district,” said Ayres.

Accomplishing these goals does not come without obstacles and hard work. The boys didn’t look at Dallastown as their threat as much as they did Central.

Central took a game from the Warriors early in the season; however, Ayres believes they could have defeated the Panthers in county finals.

“Central beat us pretty bad in the beginning of the season. If we make it to the county final, we play them,” said Ayers. “That’s pretty scary, but I think we can come back and win.”

While the boys looked forward to taking down Central in counties, they will not get the chance. After Dallastown took both semi-final victories in boys 2-0 and in girls 1-0 on Tuesday, the Warriors have turned their focus to districts.

The warrior girls and boys teams have been successful thus far and owe it to their hard work and ability to work together.

Senior Maddie Ketterer believes some praise should be given to the new coach.

“A new coach definitely helped out,” said Ketterer. “He’s definitely put more effort into practices and summer work.”

Senior Andrew Sweigard, currently injured and out for counties, has seen great success coming from the boys’ teamwork.

“The main reason for our success is that our team bond is really good, and we all get along,” said Sweigard.

Other than the opponents, the boys and girls will be facing obstacles like injuries throughout postseason. Sweigard is only one of the many boys that have been blocked from playing by injuries; however, the girls team has struggled with far more injuries.

Ketterer realizes that several injuries in such a critical time of the season could be their largest obstacle.

“[Our biggest obstacle will] probably be getting players back because we have four starters injured,” said Ketterer.

Districts brings together the best of the best with rounds of single elimination. Playoffs are determined by power rankings made according to the season records. The teams’ successes thus far gives them an advantage going into districts. The girls and boys should face teams placed low in the rankings. Both teams will continue to work hard through the close of their seasons hoping to bring home titles.
