Clayton Leasure elected Student Council president

Junior Clayton Leasure has just entered the Student Council classroom for the first time as its incoming president.

“I’m feeling relieved and excited. It’s nice to be able to have ideas and know I’ll be able to make them happen,” said Leasure.

On Monday and Tuesday, May 5th and 6th, Student Council held officer elections during lunches. Leasure, running against opponent Sierra Clary, won the presidency.

Leasure doesn’t take office until next year, but he is already thinking about what he can do to make next school year his, and the school’s, best.

“I want to keep the regular things like Kick Cancer Week, but add a few more. I think that a Veteran’s Day assembly would be a good event to add,” he said. “In middle school, we brought in veterans to talk about their experiences, so we could do something like that.”

Other officers think that Leasure can change a few events. Sophomore Elijah Holloway thinks the new president should work on “better pep rallies because the ones this year were not great.”

Holloway went on to say that he thinks next year will be one to remember. “Clayton has experience in Student Council, so he’ll do great,” Holloway said.

Leasure has been in Student Council for all of his three years of high school. For years, he has been sharpening his skill set, working toward the presidency.

This year, Leasure served as the vice president. He will be replaced by Brooke McGee.

“We cooperate very well,” McGee said. “I know we’ll do very well next year.”

Kellin McCullough, one of the Student Council advisers, thinks Leasure will bring a new set of skills to the table. “Clayton is a very outgoing person. I’m confident that he will make great contributions to our team,” said McCullough.

Leasure himself is sure that he will do great work. “I’ll be in a solid top ten [of Student Council presidents],” he said. “Maybe seventh.”
