After a long cold winter, the annual Masters tournament at Augusta National returned and Bubba Watson celebrated as he won his second green jacket.
Going into this year’s tournament, many were not interested due to the absence of Tiger Woods. In fact the ratings were the lowest this year since the late 90’s when Tiger had just emerged on the pro golf scene. The 14 time major winner had to withdraw from this years Masters tournament due to a back injury. Woods and his pursuit of winning the most majors in history is once again stalled and is now in jeopardy.
For true golf fans, the action was just as intense as always. Returning champion Adam Scott held a spot in the top five through the first round. Other favorites like Rory Mcilroy and Phil Mickelson finished the first round in disappointing fashion.
Mickelson failed to make the second round cut and was forced out of the tournament, and Mcilroy finished in the top ten. Both were no match for Bubba Watson who was playing for his second masters win in the past 3 years.
In 2012, Watson took home his first Masters victory. Bubba forced a playoff with Louis Oosthuizen after an incredible hook shot out of the woods and close to the green. The shot would have been impossible for a right handed player, but luckily Bubba is left handed and delivered one of the best shots in PGA history.
A new style of golf, called “Bubba golf” by Watson’s caddy, has taken its part in the game. “Bubba golf” involves an unusual swing, driving the ball 350+ yards. A self taught player is very uncommon for a professional these days, but Watson claims he has never taken a lesson in his life.
“Bubba golf” takes place off the course too. On Sunday morning before starting his final round, Watson was answering questions for fans on twitter. The most down to earth player is a title that has been given to Watson and that is no exaggeration. After winning, Bubba went out to celebrate with his wife and son at a local Waffle House restaurant.
The most enjoyable moment of this year’s tournament had to be what took place on the 18th hole after Watson’s win. Bubba was joined by his son and wife for a heartwarming celebration. Certainly golf has taken a hit with the absence of Tiger Woods, but Bubba Watson has a charismatic personality that is sure to bring much needed attention to the game of golf.
