The softball team has a lot to make up for as they start their 2013-14 season, especially coming back from an 11-8 record last season, falling short of a district title, and losing in the first round of the tournament.
Only two seniors return for the lady warriors, Megan Rogers and Sarah Lynch, meaning that the team will have to rely on their large sophomore class for support. The team is bringing back six sophomores, including catcher Lily Yoakum, third baseman Maddy Staub, and shortstop Julia Deluca.
Staub, a third baseman and pitcher, was a key freshman for the Warriors in their 2013 season.
“I expect to go to districts,” said Staub. “I want to make it past the first round and improve what was lacking last season, which was chemistry.”
Staub, with 11 years of softball experience from little league to high school, plans to improve her pitching in the pre-season. “The whole team is full of key players,” said Staub. “If everyone contributes their part we will be successful.”
Senior and first baseman Megan Rogers has a huge roll this season, being one of the few seniors. Rogers has been playing since tee-ball and is very eager and excited for the season to start.
“I’m expecting us to be very good this year,” said Rogers. “A lot of people have been putting in time and effort in outside of workouts and practice.” Rogers also believes that a lot of the sophomores have to step up due to the young team.
Gym Teacher, Tony Sorice has been a softball coach for more than 10 years now and is always enthusiastic about the season. The team is known for their success and many would like to know how they accomplish all the success.
“I think it starts with the little league program,” said Sorice. “They do a very good job teaching the basics, and the clubs they have around here are great… it just carries to high school ball.”
The girls tryouts start March 3, and their season opener is on March 25 at Central York. The Lady Warriors are known for their successful seasons, and the tradition does not look like it will change.
