Girls Wrestling and Basketball Work Hard to Dominate

The girls on the wrestling team and the girls basketball team have worked hard in the early season to work towards dominating the competition.

Girls on the Wrestling Team

The varsity wrestling team’s record is 6-1.

Sophomore Daytona Green has been wrestling since 8th grade.

“I saw a poster for wrestling in 7th grade, and I thought about how I wanted to do it,” Green said. “I’ve always been interested in the sport, but I thought because I was a girl, I wouldn’t do well. I started doing it in 8th grade, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.”

This is Green’s third year wrestling. Even though the team lost some of the seniors, the team is progressing successfully into a new season.

“Wrestling is going pretty well, [and] this year I have many goals that I want to complete this season,” Green said. “I can’t wait for our first match and tournaments; they are always good learning experiences and opportunities to see how wrestling works.”

Green was close to some of the seniors, one of them being alumna Jada Stoneberg—her closest wrestling partner on the team.

“Losing seniors is tough each year, especially my best friend and wrestling partner, Jada Stoneberg; [it] was hard,” Green said. “But I always look at it as learning from them and still keep in contact to see how they’re doing. Just because we lose seniors doesn’t mean our team is falling apart; we build our team more and grow from what our captains and seniors have taught us the previous years.”

This is Green’s second year of being on varsity and hopes to continue this path for the remainder of her high school career..

“Next year, there will be a girls team, and I can’t wait to build it the rest of my high school wrestling career,” Green said.

The team has had a major impact on Green and her growth as a person.

’’Our team helps everyone grow,” Green said. “If we see someone struggling with a takedown or move, we help them perfect it. The wrestling team is like a family, and I appreciate every single person on the team every day. We all have hard days, but we all build each other up for the next.”

The sport has helped her improve both her physical and mental health.

“Since then it has helped me be a happier and healthier person each day, especially this year,” Green said. “My mental state has been a lot better because I am always working on something and the wrestling room is honestly a very positive space.”

Ever since she has been wrestling, there has been one thing she loves most.

“The thing I love about wrestling is the team bond and the opportunities that it gives you,” Green said. “In my eighth-grade year, I wasn’t that great…everyone’s first year is their worst, but most importantly for learning and growing. I love how every day you can learn something new and find what works for you in a match. Each day I reflect on what I can do better and what I have learned from that day, and our teammates help with that.”

Looking back on the season so far with wrestling, Green has high hopes that it will lead to a prosperous season.

“We have a solid and great team,” Green said. “I am very proud of everyone on the wrestling team and how far everyone has come as a wrestler and person. We also have a big team this year; it’s very exciting to see how our matches and tournaments will go. This also makes me even more excited for our girl’s team next year and how I can help girls who want to wrestle. If you are a girl who wants to wrestle, do it.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team currently has a 7-4 winning record, losing to Dallastown at their last game, 54-21.

Sophomore Jade Zorbaugh has been playing basketball since second grade, thanks to her dad.

“[It was] something to do when I was younger; my dad coached,” Zorbaugh said. She has been interested ever since.

The basketball team is feeling good with their practices so far.

They prove themselves daily by “putting in the work and working together, making plays for each other,” according to Zorbaugh.

Since it is a younger team, they don’t know much about each other with their on-court skills.

“It’s hard since you don’t know their strengths and weaknesses, but it’s not impossible to overcome and make it a good game,” Zorbaugh said.

A sport impacts people on a day-to-day level.

“Having someone to talk to…Getting over a hard loss with [the team] and bus dance parties are amazing,” Zorbaugh said.

She has good memories of being on the basketball team.

”My favorite thing about basketball is getting fast food after the away games, going to the movies, the car and bus rides, and the team event once a year that the coach surprises us with if we beat them at half-quart shots,” Zorbaugh said.

The next team the Warriors play against is Spring Grove  at 6-7:30 p.m.
