After taking a break from the court for 20 years, Wayne McCullough is officially back from retirement to be a part of our coaching staff here at Susquehannock.
McCullough spent 13 years coaching boys basketball at Susquehannock and 10 of those years were spent as the head varsity coach. In those 13 years, McCullough celebrated 113 wins during his coaching experience. He has also won nine sportsmanship awards, was coach of the year for YAIAA twice, and had 11 County and District Playoff appearances. McCullough has a player-centered game system which he is always ready to change to support what’s best for his players. “I don’t take what I think and try to force it on the players,” McCullough said. “I look at what the players are capable of doing, what their skills are and then molding what we do around that. So I think only to do that the game hasn’t changed. We just try to see what our skills are, what are talents are and then make the game fit that.”
In the 10 years he spent as head coach of the boys basketball team, they earned nine sportsmanship awards and became a perennial playoff team. McCullough was credited with the longest tenure as well as having the most wins out of any coach of the Susquehannock boys basketball team.
Thomas Laure, a life skills teacher and the assistant varsity basketball coach, reveals his coaching perspective for the upcoming basketball season.
Late last spring the position for the head coach opened up. As soon as the position had opened up, the first person he thought to tell was McCullough. Although McCullough is coming back for this season, this will most likely be his official last season on Susquehannock’s courts.
Two senior players, Brooks McKnight and Joe Fuller, see nothing but opportunities for the upcoming season and having McCullough as their coach.
“He’s the right guy for the job,” Fuller said. “I’ve been able to work with him in every single open gym, and he’s been nothing but great so far.”
Fuller’s main goal for his senior season is to make it to the playoffs with his coaching staff and his teammates.
Varsity guard Brooks McKnight is looking forward to the new coaching staff as well as all the new faces seen at tryouts and open gyms.
“I’m really excited to get to work with him and Coach Laure, and you know, … to see where this season takes us,” McKnight said.
Dec. 6 is the opening game for the Susquehannock boys team. Laure, McCullough and the team are looking forward to starting the season off with a home game.
