Get Warped into a New Dimension with ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie”

April 19, 2023

If you long for a movie that is like an animated fever dream, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” may be just for you.

For those who don’t know, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is based on the popular video game franchise Super Mario Bros.

This animated masterpiece will be packed full of hidden references and easter eggs that cater to the average everyday gamer.

Nintendo allowed Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the Mario franchise, to direct the film as well as Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic to co-direct. Both Horvath and Jelenic have worked together previously on the animated series “Teen Titans Go.”

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is being produced by Illumination, the studio behind popular animated films such as “Despicable Me” and “The Secret Life of Pets.” With so many successful films being produced through Illumination, there is no surprise as to why this movie did so well in the box office. In fact, the box office earned about $377 million globally over Easter weekend on the new movie alone. “The Super Mario Bros. “ will feature the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi and, notably, Jack Black as Bowser.

The movie begins with Italian-American brothers Mario and Luigi who have recently started their own plumbing business in Brooklyn. As a result, Mario quits his steady job under his ex-boss Spike who is dragging the two brothers down. After seeing a manhole leak on the news, Mario and Luigi go underground to attempt to fix it, but they get sucked into a warp pipe and are separated.

Mario finds himself in the Mushroom Kingdom, while Luigi ends up in the Dark Lands, ruled by the evil Koopa king Bowser. Bowser seeks to marry Peach; if she refuses, Bowser will destroy the Mushroom Kingdom using a Super Star.

Overall, this film deserves 4/5 feathers because this movie tends to cater to all ages as well as the old school and new school gamers. However, it is a very short and fast paced film. If it was longer, I would have given it a higher rating. But nonetheless, it is definitely a bounce back from the original Mario movie which was released in 1993 and received a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes.

All in all, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is a worthwhile watch for everyone.
