NCAA Football 2018: What to Look Out For
September 11, 2018
College football is back and is a phenomenon across America. Diehard fans are eager to drive up to the stadium in their camper and tailgate. Unfortunately, fans were heartbroken when their teams lost last season to the typical favorite, the Alabama Crimson Tide won the College Football Playoffs The College Football Playoffs (CFP) is a knockout tournament to decide the national champion. The top four teams are selected for this prestigious honor by the CFP Selection Committee The committee is made up of 13 members who are selected based off their credibility in the sport. There are many different favorites heading into the season.
Alabama is, of course, the odds-on favorite to repeat because of their prestigious program. However, there is trouble in paradise for the Crimson Tide, since there is a quarterback competition in the works. Last season, junior quarterback Jalen Hurts was benched in the CFP National Championship game and sophomore Tua Tagovailoa was put at the head of the offense. Tagovailoa won the game for the Crimson Tide, giving Alabama their 16th national title. In week 1 Tagovailoa was the starter defeating Louisville in a blowout win 51-14. After the game, coach Nick Saban was asked about the two quarterbacks and exploded on ESPN’s Maria Taylor because Saban believed the media was trying to get him to slander either Tagovailoa or Hurts and later cleared up the awkward interview.
Of course, locals are wondering about the Penn State Nittany Lions, Penn State is in a very precarious situation. Their team has worsened since losing star running back Saquon Barkley after he declared for the NFL Draft and was selected by the New York Giants. On the other hand, they still have star quarterback Trace McSorley who is an early candidate for the Heisman trophy, the most reputable award in college football. Penn State played an unranked team in Appalachian State They barely escaped this game with an overtime victory, 45-38. This was as close to a nightmare performance as the Nittany Lions could get. The defense was poor. They struggled to make tackles. In fact, they let up a 100-yard kick return touchdown on the opening kickoff. Ultimately, the Penn State defense struggled to back up the high power offense, which indicates bad things are to come for the Nittany Lions. Penn State played the Pittsburgh Panthers in an intense week 2 rivalry game and absolutely dominated with a victory, 51- 6.
The season kicked off on Saturday with a lot of upsets and thrillers such as LSU defeating Miami, Virginia Tech defeated Florida State, etc. There are many teams to watch out for such as West Virginia. West Virginia has senior quarterback Will Grier who transferred from the Florida Gators last season. Grier is also a favorable Heisman trophy contender, especially after throwing for 429 yards and 5 touchdowns against the Tennessee Volunteers. West Virginia is one of many teams to watch out for, but it is safe to say, that college football is in store for another great season with many exciting storylines.
