The Jazz Band hosted the 2018 Swing Dance, a major event held at Southern Elementary on February 9.

Junior Jazz band student Matthew Sharkey commented on the event saying, “The Swing Dance is all about bringing people out, so they can have a nice dinner and dress up for a fun night,” said Sharkey.

Sharkey said that hours of practicing goes into preparation for the swing dance and being able to play the 1920s influence swing dance music.

Over 100 attendees of children, teens and adults of all ages and participated in the dance.

Professional dance instructors from York taught attendees how to swing dance.

“If you want a fun inexpensive night and [to] have a good meal and dance, this is the event for you,” said Sharkey.

“Being taught to swing dance and being able to swing dance with other people… it’s what you see in the old movies, and it’s so much fun and people, in general, enjoy it,” said Sharkey.
