Susquehannock student Michael Torbert recently participated in the Youth Leadership Council (YLC) in Washington, D.C. The Youth Leadership Council is sponsored by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

Only one student from each state was chosen to participate in the YLC during the week-long National Rural Electric Youth Tour held in June 2017.  Torbert was nominated by Adams Electric to interview for the opportunity. “I didn’t have a chance to be nervous,” said Torbert. “I interviewed on the first day of the Youth Tour and found out that evening I was one of just 44 students in the United States selected for the Leadership Council,” he said. Torbert was only the sixth student from Adams Electric to participate in the Council.

The focus of the Youth Leadership Council is developing student leadership and public speaking skills. The participants experienced workshops, tours, and presentations during the week. Each student wrote and presented a speech to their peers. “I learned so much from the opportunity and made connections which will directly impact my future,” said Torbert. “I made friends from all over the country. It was life-changing,” he said.

Torbert was invited to present his speech at the Pennsylvania state-wide annual meeting of electric cooperative associations at Pennsylvania State University in August 2017.
