Orchestra Students Say Goodbye with Last Concert of the Year

The orchestra had their last concert of the year titled Rhapsody: A Concert of Masterworks on Wednesday, May 3.  The music they performed is the most challenging that they have done all year, and the students have been preparing for this concert since mid November.

Scott Kaliszak has been the long term substitute for the orchestra this year, so this was his last official concert with the students.

When choosing the music for the program, Kaliszak chose some classic masterworks along with some of his personal favorites.

“I chose all of the music that I loved and wanted to perform with an orchestra,” said Kaliszak. “I chose music that I wanted to share with the students for a wide variety of repertoire.”

Along with being the last formal concert of the year, the spring concert is also when the orchestra takes the time to say goodbye to its students.

During the middle of the concert Kaliszak announced all of the seniors, what they were involved in with orchestra, and what their future plans entail.

As his last year comes to an end, senior Philip Karpouzie is going to miss all of the great experiences he has had in orchestra.

“I’m going to miss the energy,” said Karpouzie. “[I liked] having the chance to play music with some of my best buds.”

Not only are all of the seniors leaving, but the end of the year also means that Kaliszak is going to leave his position as orchestra director. Kaliszak has been working with the students all year as Zach Levi was on sabbatical to receive his doctorate.

Sophomore Lindsey Snyder is going to miss Kaliszak a lot as he has been very helpful to the orchestra students this year.

“He’s always so energetic [that it’s] infectious,” said Snyder. “He makes orchestra very exciting… we always do something new every day.”

The orchestra students will officially wrap up the year with the casual district wide concert on May 31 at 7 pm in the High School Auditorium.
