Meryl Streep Roasts Trump at Golden Globes
January 20, 2017
Many stars got together for the Golden Globes on January 10 to celebrate all of the movies and TV shows that occurred this year.
The Golden Globes is among the most popular award shows on television today. Many times, actors take this opportunity to advertise charities or take a stand in a social issue.
The most highlighted event in this year’s Golden Globes was Meryl Streep’s acceptance speech, where she took the opportunity to give her opinion on the election of Donald Trump.
Streep openly spoke of her disgust against Trump, specifically referencing the time that he mocked a disabled reporter at one of his rallies.
“The instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in the public… by someone powerful, it filters down into everyone’s life,” said Streep. “When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
Streep also stressed the importance of how foreign people add to the culture of America. She stated that many people in the arts come from other countries, and if it were not for the arts, then all we would have left to watch would be sports.
She was given a lot of positive feedback from the audience throughout her speech, which seemed to have made president elect, Donald Trump, not very happy.
Streep is free to express her opinion on the election; however, Trump seemed to feel otherwise. He sent out tweets attacking her speech and referred to her as “over rated.”
It is understandable as to why he would be offended by her speech; however, it is not right for the future president, as a role model to the country, to sub-tweet an actress like a child.
Streep was just expressing her opinions on the election and the state of her country, so even though the speech may have hurt his feelings, there was no need for Trump to have reacted so immaturely.
Streep saw an opportunity and took the time she had in her acceptance to explain what she, and many others, have been feeling after the presidential election. If anything, all Trump’s outlash did was reassure why she felt the need to speak out. If the president of the United States can not handle criticism in a mature manner, then Streep was justified to express her fear for this country.
