Crystal Mueller is a retired teacher that worked at Southern Elementary school for 39 years and is now a part of the Put a Sock In It foundation. Mueller and her husband were reading the newspaper when she found out about the foundation. After she found out about it, she started by putting out her first collection box in October of 2015.
Mueller tries to see from the perspective of the needy.
“They might have trouble finding job; they might have a hard time paying bills. When you are homeless and have nowhere to live or shower, it will be extremely hard to look for a job because you are not going to want to hire someone who smells,” Mueller said. Socks are hardly ever donated to the homeless, so some of them are walking around with holes in their socks or not even wearing socks.

Lacking proper clothing, the homeless are at a high risk of getting frostbite during the winter months.
Mueller feels blessed that she can give back to people that are less fortunate than herself.
“…it helps out people in need, and a lot of people that are homeless have nothing, not even a family,” said Mueller.
Bring your mismatched socks to the high school office’s collection box.
