What will be the Song of the Summer in 2015?
May 29, 2015
As June approaches and school comes to a close, the most competitive time of the year for pop is set to begin. Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” dominated last year but never really reached the point of being unstoppable, so summer 2015 is an important battleground. Let’s take a look at all of the major contenders for the season’s highest honor.
“Lean On” – Major Lazer
After years on the club circuit, Major Lazer is finally finding charts success with Danish singer MØ. “Lean On” is much more laidback than most of the songs on this list, but its charm is real and persistent, hopefully meaning sustained success for the odd, loveable track.
“The Night is Still Young” – Nicki Minaj
While it isn’t the most energetic single off of The Pinkprint, Nicki’s contemplative club anthem is finding itself on the top 40 charts, and for good reason. It’s time for a more thoughtful Nicki Minaj song (I’m looking at you, “Starships”) to get some circulation.
“Style” – Taylor Swift
Propelled by her most successful album ever, Taylor Swift isn’t done conquering the industry. In the space of a year and a half, she’s gone from taking the brunt of crazy ex-girlfriend jokes to running the industry. Her single “Style” is still dominating radio and just may pull ahead of the competition this summer, especially after the release of the “Bad Blood” music video.
“Trap Queen” – Fetty Wap
A novelty club hit is guaranteed at least once every few weeks, but Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen” has staying power. The infectious beat and irreverent lyrics have meant success for the track, but now it’s showing real potential to be on repeat all summer.
“Shut Up and Dance” – Walk the Moon
Every summer, teenagers demand an anthem with an alternative vibe (remember fun.’s “We Are Young?”), so, like clockwork, Walk the Moon has stepped up to take the helm with “Shut Up and Dance.” The track is undeniable. You know you want to sing along.
“Want to Want Me” – Jason Derulo
Lately, anything that Jason Derulo touches turns to gold. “Want to Want Me” is another one of his endless stream of singles, but it isn’t to be dismissed. The song is bright and is overproduced in the most endearing way imaginable. This is one track to look out for.
“See You Again” – Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth
Riding to the top of the charts on sentimentality alone, “See You Again” is quickly becoming a juggernaut to contend with. Sad-but-upbeat rap might be the way to go this summer. As long as the Fast and Furious franchise is alive, this song will be too.
“Hey Mama” – David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj
The second of Nicki Minaj’s two songs in the competition for song of the summer (!), “Hey Mama” is more energetic but still has the same charm. Boasting a few incredible samples, Nicki might just ride this one to the top.
