Prom Style Tips for Guys
May 3, 2015
With so many ideas for prom for girls out there, it can be easy for guys to miss essential tips for formal fashion. Here are a few to keep you looking your best on prom night.
Don’t wear sneakers.
It’s easy to make yourself think that wearing sneakers to prom will be original and stylish. Sneakers are easy to wear, are the go-to for the entire population of high school, and don’t hurt as much as a pair of dress shoes do. Here’s the issue, though; looking back on your prom pictures a decade from now, you’ll notice that your entire outfit was ruined by a pair of sneakers.
Sophomore Philip Karpouzie understands the importance of a grown-up sense of style.
“Look at rapper role models. Look at Kanye West for how to dress up,” Karpouzie said. “You should look like you’re in a classy music video.”
You’ll appear so much more put together (especially to your date) by wearing leather shoes. Put some effort into looking the part for three hours and then save the sneakers for the afterparty.
Buy your tux.
On prom night, you want to look your best. That Men’s Wearhouse tuxedo you rented works, but it probably doesn’t fit as well as it should, especially for the most formal event of the year. Instead, make an investment on a nice suit or tux (it should cost around the same amount of money that a rental would) at J.Crew, Frank & Oak, or Indochino.
“Wear nice clothes instead of something that looks like you found it in a trashcan and threw it on,” said Karpouzie.
While a rented suit probably won’t be all that bad, you’ll look so much better with a little effort.
Senior Clayton Leasure also knows the importance of looking sharp and developing your own sense of style.
“When people go to prom, they assume that they should match their date. Maybe that’s not always the way to go,” said Leasure. “I prefer complementing, like blue with green. It’s paying tribute to your date.”
A suit is one of the most important and classic pieces of any adult’s wardrobe. After you buy a suit that fits (in black or navy, preferably), get it tailored by a professional. After prom, you’ll still have a classic, useful wardrobe staple to wear again.
Pay attention to the details.
Your outfit should look good, but accessories are what ties everything together. Anyone can wear a suit, but how many guys differentiate their look? A pair of socks that coordinate with your date’s dress can show that you’re matching without being too obvious. Decide between a regular tie or a bow tie. Ditch the cummerbund. Wear a watch, or a tie bar, or cufflinks. Make sure you get a haircut a week before the big day.
Junior Michella Salvitti knows the power of the small stuff.
“Guys should definitely style their hair,” said Salvitti. “Do something out of the ordinary.” She also has another word of advice for guys headed to prom. “I think bow ties are in this season. Bow ties, suspenders, and vests are the best,” said Salvitti.
The details of your outfit make you look confident and help you stand out from everyone else.
Be a good date.
Prom is as much about celebrating the end of the year as it is about pretending to be classy. Odds are, whether your date is a friend or something more, she wants to be treated better than she would be on a daily basis.
“If you’re going out for dinner before, pay for it,” said Leasure. “Pay for the tickets too.”
Some other ideas are opening the car door for her, helping her into her seat, and giving her your attention all night. Showing chivalry can go a long way on prom night.
