‘Insurgent’ Has the Audience on the Edge of Their Seats

By Nicole Michels, Reporter

Burning buildings, exhilarating fights, romance, and comedy-Insurgent has it all; director Robert Schwentke successfully provides all  sought after aspects in one movie.

Insurgent takes place in the dystopian city of Chicago where Erudite leader Jeanine (Kate Winslet) is hunting down divergents. Divergents are people who do not fit into one faction but fit into multiple ones. Four (Theo James) and Tris (Shailene Woodley) are her two main focuses, listing them as fugitives and hoping to encourage people to turn them in if they see them.

Going into the movie, I worried that it might not live up to the high expectations everyone had towards it. It didn’t, it surpassed my expectations, and it is a great adaptation of the book written by Veronica Roth. According to USA today Insurgent’s earnings surged to $21.3 million, surpassing last weekend’s box office champion, Cinderella, by an estimated $11.8 million.

The movie somehow managed to make a terrible situation into one that had everyone laughing. The writers Brian Duffield, Akiva Goldsman and Mark Bomback gave actors like Miles Teller lines that had the whole audience cracking up laughing, releasing the tension from the dark scene. Being able to turn an intense scene into something funny is a remarkable talent that not everyone has. The writers for Insurgent definitely have that talent.

The casting directors and executive producers pulled out all the stops to make this film. From Academy Award winner Kate Winslet to well-renowned actor Miles Teller (Peter), the whole cast brought the emotion needed to make you really believe that all this was happening. Shailene Woodley (Tris) did a phenomenal job at portraying the role of a girl whose worst demon is herself, having to battle herself along with Jeanine and the rest of the people trying to kill her. Theo James (Four) showed a much softer side in this movie with his love for Tris. This sequel has expanded the cast with acting greats such as Octavia Spencer and Naomi Watts.

The chemistry between Shailene Woodley and Theo James is remarkable. Woodley and James show the audience what true love really looks like. Whether it’s a little glance or they are kissing passionately, it was no secret that they had chemistry and were pulled to one another. Sadly, James does have a girlfriend, so any off screen romance you were hoping for will not be happening in the near future.

The stunt work done in this film is breathtaking. Woodley is seen jumping from collapsing buildings and running through fire. There was a countless number of fight scenes in the film, and James made it look easy. Using his head as his weapon of choice, he could get out of any situation.

Again,  it surpassed my expectations with ease- a must see.
