SHS Places First in Safe Driving Competition, Connor Hood Advances to State Competition

A team of student drivers from Susquehannock High School earned first place recently in a safe driving competition. The team, comprised of seniors Connor Hood and Elijah Holloway, and junior Hailey Miller competed against teams from 18 other schools in York and Adams Counties during the 25th Annual York/Adams Safe Driving Competition for Youth at South Western High School. This is the second time in three years Susquehannock High School has won the competition.

Hood placed third overall and qualified for the state competition, which will be held May 12, 2016 in Harrisburg. Holloway placed fourth overall and is a state qualifying alternate. Both students also tied for first place in the written portion of the competition.

“Although Miller did not place in the individual events, her high scores enabled Susquehannock to place first in the team competition,” Susquehannock High School Teacher Doug Truscott said.

Sponsored by the Center for Traffic Safety and the York Area Highway Safety Council, the event featured teen drivers, who represented their perspective high schools and competed in three categories of driving: Driving Skills Range, a Perceptual Driving Test, and a written test on the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual. Three students from each school competed in each category for individual and team scores. During the event, police officers from local police departments served as course officials. Local businesses also provided scholarships to the competition winners.
