Kendel Abrams Makes it to State Golf Championships
October 27, 2017
Senior Kendel Abrams competed in state golf championships this Monday and Tuesday, finishing in sixth place.
Abrams has experienced a variety of success playing golf throughout the 9 years in which she has been involved with the sport.
This week, she competed in states and spent the first day preparing to greatly advance during the second day.
“On Monday and Tuesday I went to states. The first day is basically just trying to get into the flow and the rhythm of the competition. Tuesday is just moving up the leaderboard, to see how high I can finish up,” said Abrams.
Abrams recently became the top qualifier in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association East Region golf tournament, winning a close competition in a final playoff.
“One of my largest accomplishments was definitely winning districts in East Regional, I didn’t really expect that coming into the season, but I knew I was capable of it. Seeing all my hard work paying off was definitely exciting,” said Abrams.
This year, Abrams has performed well, finishing with high placings in multiple competitions.
“I finished second in the league, and then first overall, as the girls in York Adams County, and then 6th in the state,” said Abrams.
Her success was even recognized in 2013, where through The First Tee, she was able to meet president Barack Obama.
“It was exciting at the time, and I met him [Barack Obama] because of First Tee, a nationwide program that helps kids get started with golf. They invited both the Baltimore chapter and the Washington D.C. chapter down to the White House, and it was two participants each, and of course my brother and I won. And so we got a picture with both him and the Presidents Cup Team. It was an exciting experience and definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Abrams.
Abrams is proud of her accomplishments, as she was initially uninterested in playing golf, but excelled at it once she began playing.
“It was pretty good, I know when I was young I didn’t really expect myself to be a golfer, but considering how far I’ve taken this sport and successful I’ve been in it, it’s definitely exciting and quite surprising at the same time, considering where I started,” said Abrams.
