Alumni Spotlight – Bob Williams ‘52
January 1, 2014
Bob was a member of the first Susquehannock class to hold graduation in the newly constructed high school in 1952, recalling the chairs being installed in the auditorium just in time for the ceremony. While at SHS, he was a member of the track team, scorekeeper for the basketball team, Class Vice-President, in the cast of the all-school play, and a participant in “all things musical” as an accomplished trumpet player.
After graduation, he worked as an apprentice tool and die maker at American Insulator, leaving after a year for two years of service in the 208th U.S. Army Band in occupied Berlin.
Upon return from the service in 1956, he married Nancy Keeney ’55 and worked as a butcher for 8 years, leaving that trade in 1964 to join the Glen Rock State Bank as assistant cashier. For the next 35 years, Bob performed every duty there was to perform at the bank, working his way through the ranks to its Presidency, a position from which he retired in 1999. Under his leadership, the “State Bank” was regarded as one of the premier financial institutions in the area, eventually becoming part of the Susquehanna Bank organization.
Bob continued his musical career with the Southern York County Band and several other performing groups in the area including the Theatre of the Performing Arts of Southern York County. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors of the York County Vocational-Technical School Authority, Chaired the Shrewsbury Borough Sewer Authority, and is a Deacon at Mason-Dixon Baptist Church. In this “retirement,” he was a faithful member of several planning and advisory committees in the school district, and is a charter member of the Susquehannock High School Alumni Association, where he is a member of its steering committee.
Bob and Nancy are the proud parents of Susan (’75) and Shari (’79), the grandparents of Amber Buser (’03) and Amy Buser (’07), and great-grandparents of Elissa.
Congratulations, Bob on your many contributions to school, community, and country, and for making us all “Warrior Proud!”
