Susquehannock High School Students Receive Chromebooks for Collaboration

The Southern York County School District began a 1:1 program recently, which allows students at Susquehannock High School to use a Chromebook laptop computer throughout the school year, both at school and at home.

With the help of the Student Help Desk (SHED), Susquehannock students obtained their devices, tested them, and learned how to use them properly. The Chromebooks permit users to run Google’s Chrome Operating System, primarily while connected to the internet, with most applications and documents accessible in the cloud.

SHED member and senior Alex Wright helped set up the Chromebooks prior to student deployment. “We tested them, both online and offline, and worked to maximize their efficiency,” he said.

The project for obtaining Chromebooks began two years ago when several teachers and technology staff members researched the benefits of 1:1 programs, Susquehannock Principal Dr. Kevin Molin said.

“As a result, we felt the Chromebook provided a tool that met all of the learning preferences,” he said. “In addition, the Chromebook’s cost ensured that the District could provide equity at both home and school.”

Teachers and students will use the Chromebooks in the classroom to increase student collaboration. Students may also connect with their peers in other classes. In addition, students will be able to improve their research skills to enhance classroom discussions, Molin said.

For example, through the Chromebooks, students will be able research current events during class, such as the Syrian immigration crisis, social studies teacher Matt Amberman said.

“Students will be allowed to take them home so they can continue the educational process,” he added.  “Learning is a 24/7 concept – students will now have the ability to continue their work and collaboration with others as needed.”
